Several months ago, my husband told me he was jealous of the bond I had with our son. I couldn't deny it; my son just responded better with me. It's not that my husband was doing anything particularly wrong, but I was home more with the boy and had learned what made him smile, what comforted him, knew when he was ready for another nap, etc.

My post for today started out being about kids and cell phones, but in the middle of writing it, the telephone rang interrupting my train of thought. How ironic. I usually don't answer the phone, and this time was no different. If it's important, they'll leave a message, right? Well, there was a message, but I continued typing while trying to hear it, with no real interest. When I realized it was my daughter's voice, I jumped out of my chair and ran to the telephone.
She's vacationing with her boyfriend in the Caribbean, and I didn't expect to hear from her until they return home on Friday.
So when I heard her voice, I panicked.

Have you seen those cute little life-like "breathing" pets? They look like curled-up, sleeping puppies and kittens and when you put batteries in them, their abdomens rise and fall and they really do look like they're breathing. When I walked past a shop on Main Street that had a bunch of them in their window, they caught my eye and I stopped (with everyone else) and watched for a minute or so. I noticed how everyone who stopped to look walked away smiling. Children squealed with delight at just how cute they were.
Adorable and realistic has that effect on people. Sometimes. But other times it's just creepy.
