All Hail The King

Chicken Burger King  has taken steps towards buying only so-called cruelty-free animals for use in their products.  Some of these changes include:

  • 10% of its current pork purchases come from suppliers that do not use gestation crates.
  • By the end of the year, 20% of the pork purchases with be crate-free.
  • Soon, 2% of the many eggs purchased will come from hens that are not confined to small cages.  By the end of the year, that should be 4%.  A small number, but it's a start.
  • Use of more humane killing methods, such as controlled atmosphere stunning.

More importantly, this sends a message to suppliers that caged vs. cage-free can be a determining factor in purchasing.

Even PETA, which officially opposes eating any animals, has admitted that, if you're going to kill animals for food, at least use humane methods.

Will this cause other chains, such as market-leader McDonald's to make similar changes?  Stay tuned...
