In a recent article in Men's Health, the writer laments the lack of nutritional information available from major food chains such as TGI Friday, Applebee's, Fudd Rucker's, and Papa John's. Apparently, in many sandwiches lurk over 1,000 calories. One salad mentioned contains a little over 1,000 calories. If the more supposedly healthful choices are that bad, it's implied, then the other dishes must be even worse!
While we can sympathize with those who dine out frequently wanting to make smarter choices, and requiring more information in order to do so, many of us make dining out an occasional or rare treat. You can bet we're going to order the yummiest appetizer, the heartiest entree, the most decadent dessert.
We won't give a thought to calories or cholesterol or fat or sodium. Dining at home gives one total control over the nutritional content of food, a tight budget is best served by homemade cooking, and a desire to stay in shape or lose weight may motivate us to eat "sensibly." Not to mention the sheer fun of cooking! But when faced with a menu of many enticing dishes, we excitedly choose whatever we want. We don't think knowing the true calorie count would dissuade us one bit from spinach artichoke dip, angel hair pasta, and chocolate brownie mudslide. Once a month or so.
